Do you realize how many people have substantially less insurance than they need? Do you realize how many people have no health insurance whatsoever? The answers to both questions probably will not come as much as a surprise. Given the state of the economy it comes as no shock that a lot of people are not insured. It also comes as no surprise that a significant number of people are under insured. You can get along without insurance for a little while - but what if something happens? Where are you then? You do not want to let that happen to you.

You need to begin by compiling a list of health insurance quote estimates. This will help you to find the most affordable insurance possible. You can do this the easy way or the slightly more difficult and time consuming way. That way involves just calling insurance companies from the phone book. The added benefit here is that you get to talk to people in person.

However, you can also venture onto the Internet. Nowadays, there are a variety of insurance directories and sites which will actually compare different insurance quotes for you. These are pretty comprehensive. You basically include the same information that you would give to a live agent. As such, you can get fairly accurate estimates of expected cost. You can also see what kind of coverage you can hope to receive and what kind of premiums and deductibles you will have to pay.

Of course, before doing any of this, you need to decide what kind of insurance you actually want. For example, who do you want covered by your insurance? Is it just for you? If so, an individual policy will do. If you want your spouse covered as well, there are also policies for that. There are also policies which cover your children, or both your spouse and your children.

You also need to decide if, perhaps, you would do well with a government health insurance. These include such programs as Medicaid, Medicare, and even the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which is just for children. There are actually similar programs designed to fit a lot of social groups. However, you do have to meet certain requirements to qualify for them.

Choosing between Medicaid and Medicare really come down to eligibility. Medicaid requirements state that you must be below certain low income restrictions. Medicare is the primary government health insurance that baby boomers will utilize. It has 4 different categories, beginning with Medicare Part A, which is the standard form. Medicare Part B which is a combination, Advantage Medicare or Part C, and lastly Medicare Part D prescription coverage. Parts b through D come with additional premiums.

At this point, you need to start planning how you are going to cover the cost of your insurance. If you're retired, Medicare or Medicaid may be an obvious choice. A lot of people are greatly helped by setting up a health savings account. Just as the name implies, this is an account where you put money meant to cover both the cost of your health insurance and medical emergencies. That way you will never be at a loss.

It may seem like it is impossible to find affordable insurance. However, if you are willing to do a little research then it is not hard at all. You simply have to shop around and know exactly what you need.
