Home renter insurance is a necessity, even when you are not a homeowner, when disaster strikes, renters face the same risk as homeowners. It isn't your responsibility as a renter to insure the dwelling itself but it is to insure your personal property.

Home renter insurance will provide coverage in the event that your personal property perishes or is damaged in the event of wind, hail, lightning, fire, theft, vandalism, smoke, the weight of ice, snow, or sleet, etc. It will NOT however, cover such things as earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. In the southern parts of the US some can purchase insurance riders that will cover hurricanes or floods and those in the west can often buy earthquake insurance too.

Pay attention to your policy and see if you have purchased replacement cost coverage or actual cash value as there is a very big difference. Actual cash value only covers what you paid for your things way back when. An example is, if you purchased something great not many years ago for a specific sum and it is ruined in a blaze, your insurance company will reimburse merely for what the aged one was valued at, less your deductible.

Replacement cost coverage for home renter insurance is much different and then obviously will cost more as well. This type of coverage will actually pay to replace your items for what they would cost now, minus the deductible. Of course most people would want to replace their lost goods and wouldn't be able to do that only being reimbursed what they paid years ago for something.

Purchase a separate rider for anything that you consider precious such as jewels. The policy might not allow full recovery for such items so it is best to make sure that you are covered. Make sure that you have a record and pictures of everything that you would add to a claim and put it in a safety deposit box or somewhere where it is not subject to any threat of damage.

You can lower your home insurance rates by obtaining and evaluating quotes from at least five reputable quotes sites.
