Affordable Home Insurance Rates: You don't have to do exceptional things in most cases in order to reduce your rates. Just knowing a few compulsory things and implememting them will make a huge difference. Here are several tips that will help you achieve that goal...

1. Dead-bolt locks on all doors to the exterior will help you attract a cheaper rate. It's more difficult for thieves to break into homes that have such locks. And as you know, the less the risk of burglary in a house, the more affordable rates it will get.

2. Get an umbrella policy and reduce your homeowners' liability coverage. Why this is so much recommended is that it even gives you better coverage for far less.

Remember what the liability part of your home insurance policy is for: To protect you from losses you could incur because of injuries to people on your property. Furthermore, if a lawsuit results from such an injury, it also takes care of it. But like every other thing in insurance, there is a limit to the amount that is covered and your home liability coverage might even be totally inadequate.

Nevertheless, an umbrella insurance policy will easily bankroll fully even the most cost-intensive of lawsuits and all you'd have to pay are very small premiums.

3. While getting cheap rates should excite you, you should be more interested in an insurance company's rating. Few things can be more painful than finding out that made payments faithfully to the wrong insurer only when you make a claim. It's very important that you spend time to first verify from your state's department of insurance website or its equivalent. You can simply find out an insurer's rating there (and even if they even licensed to offer insurance in your state).

You can also obtain helpful information about an insurer from independent organizations like BBB, A.M Best Company, Phelps, Inc., Standard & Poor's Insurance Rating Services, Moody's Investor Services, Inc.

4. A household that has a smoker or smokers will get more expensive premiums. And statistics have it that over 23,000 residential fire every year could be traced to smoking. Non-smoking households pay less than households with smokers. For people who smoke, note that you're entitled to a downward review in your rate once you've quit smoking for more than 12 months. Unless your insurer is among the few that don't consider smoking as a factor in arriving at your rate, leave if your rate is not reduced after this.

5. Ensure you don't leave ladders hanging around. They could really help a burglar. Don't also leave your tools, machinery or such on the lawn or anywhere in the open as they could lead to accidental injury and add to your liability claims. They also make breaking and entry a lot easier for burglars. Keep them well and you'll not increase your premium.

6. You can get better quotes on home insurance today by visiting at least five quotes sites. Each quotes site will take you about 5 minutes or less to obtain quotes. (Some folks give details that are not really correct about themselves. That isn't a smart move since the quotes you'll get this way will NOT do you any good). You'll simply pick what represents the best home insurance quote for you from the list of quotes obtained. It's as simple as that. However, you could get savings hundreds of dollars.
